When Seconds Count: Should You Call 000 or Start CPR?

When someone collapses and stops breathing, time is everything. Without oxygen, the brain can start to shut down in just minutes. That’s why starting CPR immediately is critical. So you might wonder, is it worth taking the time to call 000? Should you delay lifesaving CPR to call 000?

Why Calling 000 Comes First

You should call 000 before commencing.

CPR keeps blood flowing to the brain and vital organs when the heart stops. Without it, survival chances drop by about 10% every minute. But while CPR is critical, it can’t restart the heart.

Calling 000 ensures paramedics are on their way as soon as possible. They bring lifesaving equipment, like defibrillators, that can restore a normal heart rhythm. Skipping this step delays the advanced care needed to truly save a life.

How to Call 000 and Start CPR Without Losing Time

Balancing CPR and calling 000 is easier than you might think:

  • If You’re Alone: Call 000 immediately and put your phone on speaker mode. The operator will guide you through CPR while help is on the way.

  • If You’re with Others: Ask someone nearby to call 000 while you start chest compressions. Assign other tasks, like finding an AED, to bystanders.

The key is to act fast. Calling 000 should be one of the first things you do because EMS is essential to long-term survival.

Why Skipping 000 Is Dangerous

Delaying that call means professional help takes longer to arrive. CPR is only a temporary solution to keep the brain and organs alive—it doesn’t fix the underlying issue. Without defibrillation and advanced care, the chances of recovery plummet.

Calling 000 ensures paramedics are on their way while you do everything possible to stabilize the patient. It’s a vital first step in saving a life.

Hi there! I'm Jack Majlinger. I began my first aid journey back in 2012, with my first "first aid" course. It was after a hiking accident where a friend had to be airlifted. Over the years, my first aid skills grew, I volunteered at equestrian events and local shows and became a first aid trainer.

When I'm not working on content, I enjoy spotting birds in the wild and writing jangle pop tunes.
