Shocking Reality: Why Brisbane Needs to Take Electrical Safety Seriously

Brisbane, we need to talk. Not about the beautiful weather or Origin III, but about something that’s been weighing heavily on my heart lately – electrocutions in our beloved city.

Recently, a 30-year-old man from the Sunshine Coast lost his life after being electrocuted at a worksite near Brisbane airport. A young life, full of promise, cut short in an instant. And he’s not alone. In another incident, a man in his 40s was rushed to Ipswich hospital in critical condition after suffering an electric shock at work.

These aren’t just statistics. These are our neighbours, our friends, our family members. Each incident leaves behind shattered lives and communities in mourning.I think of the colleagues who witnessed these horrific accidents, feeling helpless and scared.

But here’s the thing, Brisbane – we can do something about this.

Knowledge is power. Understanding electrical safety and knowing how to respond in an emergency can be the difference between life and death.

That’s why I’m reaching out to you today. A LVR course isn’t just about ticking a box for workplace compliance. It’s about equipping you with the skills to save a life – maybe even the life of someone you love.

In a CPR/LVR course, you’ll learn how to:

  • Recognise the signs of electric shock
  • Safely approach an electrical accident scene
  • Perform CPR if needed
  • Provide crucial first aid for electrical burns

But more than that, you’ll gain the confidence to act in an emergency. Because when seconds count, hesitation can cost lives.

I know it’s not pleasant to think about these things. It’s much easier to believe “it won’t happen to me” or “I’ll figure it out if I need to”. But the recent tragedies in our city show us that we can’t afford to be complacent.

So I’m asking you, Brisbane – let’s take this seriously. Let’s honour those we’ve lost by ensuring we’re all prepared to prevent future tragedies. Consider taking a CPR/LVR course today. It’s a small investment of your time that could yield the ultimate return – a life saved.
