What Does ‘Electrocuted’ Really Mean?

First things first, let’s clear up a common misconception. You might hear people say, “I got electrocuted, but I’m okay.” Well, technically, that’s not quite right.

‘Electrocution’ actually means death caused by electric shock. If someone survives an electric shock, they’ve been ‘shocked’ or ‘suffered an electrical injury’, but not ‘electrocuted’.

That said, any electrical injury can be extremely serious and potentially life-threatening, even if it doesn’t result in immediate death. So let’s talk about what to do if someone gets shocked.

What to Do When Someone Gets Electrocuted (or Shocked)

If you see someone who’s received an electric shock, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Don’t rush in! First, make sure the area is safe. You can’t help if you become a victim too.
  2. Turn off the power at the mains or meter box if possible. If not, try to separate the person from the electrical source using a non-conductive material like a wooden broom handle.
  3. Check for responsiveness. Call out to them and gently tap their shoulder.
  4. Call 000 immediately if they’re unresponsive or severely injured.
  5. Check breathing and pulse. If they’re not breathing and have no pulse, start CPR immediately (this is where your CPR/LVR course training comes in handy!).
  6. Treat any burns. Once you’re sure they’re breathing, cover any burns with a sterile gauze or clean cloth. Don’t use blankets or towels that may stick to the burns.
  7. Keep them still and lying down, with their head slightly lower than their trunk and legs elevated. This helps combat shock.
  8. Stay with them until emergency services arrive.

Remember, even if they seem fine, anyone who’s received an electric shock should be checked by a medical professional. Internal injuries can be serious and might not be immediately apparent.

Shaking After Being Electrocuted
